Heavy Periods

Dr. Lukes has focused on the evaluation and treatment of heavy periods (abnormal uterine bleeding) for over 20 years. She has published peer-reviewed articles and book chapters.  She has been interviewed by local and news organization regarding her expertise.  Her research includes being the lead investigator on a number of medical and surgical treatments for heavy periods.

As a co-founder of the Women's Hemostasis and Thrombosis Clinic at Duke University Medical Center (DUMC) in 2000, she has worked with hematologists from all over the word.  She understands the impact on women who may have a bleeding disorder or a thrombotic (clotting) disorder. While at DUMC she did research with both the NIH and CDC regarding gynecologic issues in women with bleeding or thrombotic disorders.  One of the most common clinical problems for such women  is heavy periods or heavy menstrual bleeding.

For over 20 years, Dr. Lukes has consistently presented and/or published research each year at national and international meetings as an expert on menstrual disorders (including the American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists or ACOG). She has also provided expert advice to not only her patients, but pharmaceutical companies, medical device companies, as well as the FDA.

We offer a comprehensive evaluation of heavy periods / abnormal uterine bleeding (any change in bleeding). WHY did your bleeding change or why has it always been heavy? We provide choices for management, not just hysterectomy, but different medications, including Lysteda, the Mirena IUD, birth control pills (and different ways to use generic and brand named pills), endometrial ablations (e.g. Novasure) and the latest treatments for uterine fibroids (uterine artery embolization or the latest research). One of our clinical trials in 2016 is called the Sonata Clinical Trial (www.sonatatrial.com).  This includes a device,  the Sonata™ System, which involves an investigational device that specificall targets fibroids and preserves the uterus through an incision-free, outpatient procedure

What is a NovaSure endometrial ablation?  This is an effective treatment for heavy periods. In fact, up to 50-70% of women stop having periods after undergoing a NovaSure ablation. Dr. Lukes has lectured, trained physicians, and published on the NovaSure procedure. She is one of the leading experts on this treatment. Dr. Lukes states, "If women have finished having children and have a normal endometrial sampling, then they may be a good candidate for this treatment".  www.novasure.com
