Heavy Periods

Dr. Lukes has focused on the management of heavy periods (abnormal uterine bleeding) for over 10 years. Recently featured by local news (abc 11 news with Tisha Powell) and national programing, Dr. Lukes discussed heavy periods and new medical treatments (see interview). This interview focused on the novel medication, Lysteda, which is a nonhormonal treatment for heavy periods. As the lead investigator withiin the United States, Dr. Lukes offers expertise on Lysteda, a nonhormonal, nonsurgical treatment for heavy periods.

Dr. Lukes co-founded the Women's Hemostasis and Thrombosis Clinic at Duke University Medical Center in 2000. This allowed her to focus on bleeding and clotting. The most common clinical problem she managed was heavy menstrual bleeding.

In May, 2011 (and 2010), Dr. Lukes presented at the annual meeting for the American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists (ACOG) about heavy periods. She is considered one of the leading experts on heavy periods within the United States. Call today if you have questions.

We offer a comprehensive evaluation of heavy periods or abnormal uterine bleeding (any change in bleeding). WHY did your bleeding change? We provide choices for management, not just hysterectomy, but different medications, including Lysteda, birth control pills (Natazia), and more. In addition, we emphasize options such as the Mirena - an intrauterine system which provides both contraception and decrease in menstrual bleeding. Also, in-office treatments, such as the NovaSure endometrial ablation, will be discussed.

Heavy Menstrual Bleeding (HMB) is common impacting up to 1 in 4 women (25%). Why does this occur? Some of the more frequent reasons include:

  • GYN causes (fibroids, polyps, ovarian cysts . . . . )
  • Cancer
  • Bleeding Disorders
  • Thyroid Disorders
  • Infections
  • Hormonal Problems and more

Call today for a comprehensive evaluation on heavy periods.

What is a NovaSure endometrial ablation?  This is an effective treatment for heavy periods. In fact, up to 50-70% of women stop having periods after undergoing a NovaSure ablation. Dr. Lukes has lectured, trained physicians, and published on the NovaSure procedure. She is one of the leading experts on this treatment. Dr. Lukes states "If women have finished having children and have a normal endometrial sampling, then they may be a good candidate for this treatment".  www.novasure.com
