Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a common problem for women. Within the United States, between 20-40% of women experience PMS (some estimates include up to 75% have some mild symptoms of PMS).
The diagnosis of PMS is made using prospective diaries. Problems may include changes in mood, including depressed mood, feelings of hopelessness, increased anxiety or feeling 'on edge', feeling suddenly sad or tearful, as well as persistent anger or irritability. In addition, women may experience a lack of energy, difficulty sleeping, and difficulty concentrating. Many women overeat or have cravings for specific foods. Often, a decreased interest in usual activities occurs with a subjective sense of being overwhelmed or out of control. The most common physical symptoms include headache, breast tenderness, a sensation of bloating and weight gain.
There are options for treatment! We offer a variety of treatments for PMS, including a new clinical trial. This trial is being done only within North Carolina, call today for more information.
Karen - "I have always had PMS. It is horrible, and my family hated to be around me during those times. After I had an endometrial ablation with Dr. Lukes several years ago, I have had such improvement in my PMS symptoms. I have very little bleeding during my periods. It has been absolutely incredible. I love Dr. Lukes - she helped me tremendously."
Sally - "When you have PMS, you don't want to deal with anything before your period. I mean nothing. I was an awful wife and mother during those times. Now that I have asked for help - I can function. I don't cry for days on end. I encourage women to call for help."
